For all this city's artifice and opulence, it is not pretending to be anything other than what it is: a place where gross excess and self-destructive overindulgence are acceptable and encouraged. As for the suburbs surrounding 'Disneyland for grown-ups,' they are characterized by congestion, dehydration and isolation.
